Beginning Painting Class Syllabus

(Click HERE to download the Beginning Painting Syllabus for printing)

This is a basic syllabus for the Beginning Painting Class.  I am very much a hands-on teacher… we learn about art by DOING art work.  For example, you don’t learn to play a saxophone by reading about saxophones… you actually learn to play it.

I will be throwing some art appreciation/history from time to time, but it will only be to support the drawing and painting lessons.

I will be following the same Oklahoma standards that I followed when I taught 7-12th grade art classes… my goal is to teach the same skills that I did in the public school classroom.

We will be focusing on Beginning Drawing in this class… the supply list is shown below. We will also be learning the seven elements of the Visual Arts.

Another thing we do is host a virtual art exhibit so your students can display their works and receive feedback from their parents, friends, and peers. That can be found on the Art4HomeSchool.com website on the “Gallery” page.

Meet Your Instructor

Greg Ray - Instructor

Greetings…. my name is Greg Ray, and I am so glad to meet you.

I am a career educator, living in McLoud, Oklahoma for over 35 years now. I graduated with a Bachelors in Art Education from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha.

I have been married for 45 years… my wife Sharon was also a career educator. I have raised two children… and I now have two granddaughters.

I taught art in the public schools classroom for 24 years… I then became the technology director for the McLoud school district for the next 10 years. I worked part time as the district technology coordinator for the next seven years, and then went full time again as the high school art teacher to finish out the 2016-17 school year.  I am now fully retired, ready to take on a new challenge… teaching art in the home school arena.

Along the way I also coached junior high and middle school girls basketball… I led worship at the McLoud First Baptist Church for 19 years.  I also have an online business presence, building websites for myself and others.

I have received numerous awards for my art work, and I have taught students who have also won awards for their work, as well as college art scholarships.

My favorite art mediums are watercolors, acrylic paintings, and pencil drawings… and, although I haven’t worked in the medium for some time, I love clay sculpture.

My primary focus in my home school art classes is to help my students, and parents, discover the rich rewards of creating art work, either as a hobby or as a future vocation.  I am really excited about this format as it allows me to include the students’ parents in the classes as well as the kids.

Lesson Curriculum

The goal of the Beginning Painting Class is to introduce the three basic water based panting media… watercolors, acrylics, and goache (pronounced gwash).

Students will need to provide the “support” for the paintings. What is that?  The support is the surface upon which you are painting. In our case, for watercolors, this would be a watercolor pad. For acrylics we will use a canvas panel.  For goache, we will use matboard.

Students will also need to provide their own brushes, and their own paint sets. Paint sets are usually limited in the number of colors provided, so if there is a particular color needed, I will supplement the students with access to my paints as well.

There is a complete pictorial list of supplies below…

This class is designed for older middle school and high school students, and adults. Younger students will be accepted by special permission of the teacher and with parent attending class along with the student.

The painting class is arranged a little different than my drawing classes. Students will do at least two basic exercises with each medium and then at least one painting. According to the time available and the amount of time working at home, students may be able to produce more than the one painting.

One more important note…

I have never taught a painting class in the home school arena where students only meet once each week. The planned curriculum may be adjusted as we actually meet and I learn how things work best.
